Hi, I have a Quad 44 which I bought a couple of years ago. It's all standard and a mark II version according to the Dada Electronics website. I have been doing some reading regarding the Quad 44 and I am unsure about the real potential of this preamp and whether I should invest some money in it before using it, or just sell it and put the money into something.
In a nutshell, the QUAD 44 preamp is: The bigger brother of the QUAD 34 preamp. It has more inputs and almost unequalled versatility in terms of input configuration via exchangeable input modules. I have not had a Quad 99 pre amp though my hands. I have three or four 33 preamps, two Quad 34 pre amps and a 44 preamp. I also have a Quad 22 tube pre amp I bought in 1965. I have no reason to suspect that the Quad 99 is anything other than satisfactory, although that was designed after Peter's retirement. Here are pictures of my 909 amps.

I have found the Quad 44 to be excellent with phono cartridges as you can alter the loading and impedance settings easily by IP switches on the input card - without opening up the casing.
